A walkthough: The virtual Aachener Cathedral

In Aachen (a small city in the far west of Germany) was built a wonderful cathedral (German: Dom) about 1200 years ago. Throught the time lots of things changed in the cathedral: in the 1500 century the big chorus was built, in the next centuries lots of small chapels were built and torn down.

This project was intended to get an impression of the original cathedral: the colors, darkness and light.

The following AVI files are in DivX :-) format, you need this codec to view these files.

  1. The first (and at the moment only) walk-through is somewhat unrealistic. The colors are not as they were and the light is too bright. But you can get a first impression about the cathedral.

Size 1500 pictures at 25 Hz (i. e. 60 seconds) with a resolution of 256x192. This took about 5 days computation time on a Celeron 400MHz. The resulted 1500 files (which each is 147471 bytes) are somewhat about 210MByte. The encoding was done in about three minutes. Size: 5967046 bytes; Download: dom_walk01.avi
